HISPANIC STUDENTS CHURCH

The church is making a difference within the Southern Adventist University and the Collegedale community by providing a local “campus church” for Hispanic students. It is not only a place to worship each Sabbath, it is a center where students use their creativity to further the mission. Under the pastoral leadership of Dr. Joel Barrios, many are “discipled” using the principles taught by Jesus Christ.

SUSTAINABLE YOUTH MINISTRY

The result of involving young people, children and adults in the mission of proclaiming the gospel through multiple ministries are an increasing number of young people attending the church.

THE CHALLENGE

The church has outgrown its building capacity

Today, the church has a membership of 325 serving more than 600 Hispanic students, who are attending Southern Adventist University. These students come to Southern from across the United States, as well as from many other countries.

Even holding two Sabbath services each week has become inadequate to accommodate the community members and students who wish to attend. For most worship services, all Sabbath School classrooms adjacent to the sanctuary are used for additional seating. Rooms are equiped with video screens to ensure participation in the services. Additionally, attendees sit on the platform, along the aisles and in the foyer. Other attendees congregate in the fellowship hall on the lower level or in the children’s Sabbath School rooms to participate through video connections. The children’s Sabbath School departments also have inadequate space to accommodate attendance.

THE SOLUTION

Build a facility that will accommodate the vision of service

With the approval of the Southern Board of Trustees, the Collegedale Spanish American SDA Church leadership envisions building a new 40,000 square foot facility at the same location of the current church. The sanctuary would accommodate at least 640 worshippers. It would include adequate space for multi-media technology, as well as offices and storage.

Rooms adapted to the learning needs of today’s children and youth will be required. A fellowship hall with a seating capacity of 350 will permit the church to expand the ministry of providing meals for students each Sabbath. This center will provide the much needed space for the Adventurers, Pathfinders, True North and Vacation Bible School programs and meetings.

THE “SU CASA” CAMPAIGN

The construction of a new Spanish American Church on the campus of Southern Adventist University offers a ‘double blessing’.

The new proposed 40,000 square-foot facility is projected to cost $7 million.

OUR GOAL

Church leadership has a vision to raise the $7 million in cash and pledges by the end of 2017.  The success of the Su Casa Capital Campaign will allow the construction of the new building during 2018, with the grand opening by early 2019.
